Our approach is fact-based and comprehensive. To achieve this, we assess the whole lifecycle of our customers' products or services using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) principle.

Our SimaPro desktop software has been the standard for experts in calculating LCAs for decades, and we are on the verge of introducing the next step: a platform that enables a broad range of sectors, companies, and audiences to learn about the facts of their sustainability, tailor-made for different user groups. With the new platform, we want to create and develop a new market, once again.

In parallel with modernizing our software product offering, we are also changing our data engineering platform to support the next generation of scalable, flexible, and intelligent solutions. We are moving the core data engineering logic out of individual products and tools, and into Microsoft Fabric; an all-in-one analytics platform that will serve as the foundation for data engineering, analytics, and data science. This architecture must be robust, scalable, and adaptable, continuously evolving to reflect modern best practices. It will enable us to build advanced data engineering and analytics solutions while embedding strong DataOps principles throughout the workflow.

Your role as Data Architect
As our Data Architect, you will design and implement robust, cloud-native data architecture to power data engineering, analytics, AI/ML applications, and next-gen sustainability tools. You’ll bring a strategic mindset with hands-on execution skills, collaborating across teams while mentoring others and setting best practices.

You’ll join our Database Implementation Team, a team of five LCA Data Analysts and Experts, and report to the Team Lead. Together with engineering and product teams, you’ll help build the scalable data infrastructure that drives our Data Management System (DMS).

Your key responsibilities:

• Architect and build a scalable, secure, and efficient DMS.
• Design and implement a robust, future-proof data architecture along with CI/CD workflows to support scalable and reliable data solutions. Design analytical and AI/ML-ready data models for dashboards, insights, and automation.
• Collaborate closely with software engineers, data scientists, LCA experts, and business stakeholders to align data infrastructure with product goals.
• Mentor data engineers and analysts on architecture, modeling, and AI/ML engineering practices.
• Identify and lead the implementation of AI/ML use cases from idea to production.
• Take ownership of the administrative aspects of the DMS, including capacity planning, cost management, workspace organization, and overall platform governance.
• Ensure data governance, quality, and compliance across all layers of the platform.
• Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

What you'll bring along

Must-haves:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 8–12 years of experience in data engineering and/or architecture, including 3+ years in a lead or architecture-focused role.
• Proven experience in designing cloud-based data platforms (preferably using Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, or Azure Synapse).
• Strong knowledge of data modeling for both OLTP (normalized) and OLAP (star schema) environments.
• Hands-on experience with modern data lakehouse technologies (e.g. Delta Lake, Parquet) and distributed data processing frameworks like Apache Spark.
• Demonstrated success in implementing AI/ML solutions into production environments.
• Solid mentoring and leadership skills; able to guide and coach a growing team.
• Structured, organized, and excellent at documentation.
• A genuine interest in sustainability and eagerness to learn about Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
• Valid work authorization for the Netherlands.

Nice-to-haves:

• Certifications in data engineering, AI/ML, or cloud architecture.
• Experience with Power BI or other visualization tools.
• Familiarity with deploying generative AI use cases.
• Business-savvy mindset: you can translate data into actionable value.
